Your home is meant to be a safe haven away from the dangers of the outside world. However, this cozy space can become a breeding ground for health hazards like mold, mildew and dust mites. Don’t let your home become a sickly space. Instead, maintain a healthy home environment with some simple maintenance tasks and tips.
Change the Air Filter
Air filters provide a safe barrier between you and the allergens in the air, but a filter will only work when it’s in good condition. Change HVAC air filters at least once every three months, and consider changing your filter monthly if you have pets or are sensitive to dust and other allergens. Don’t forget to check and change filters other places as well, like in your vacuum cleaner.
Ventilate Your Home Properly
Many homeowners work so hard to seal air leaks in the home that they forget about the importance of ventilation. If your home isn’t properly ventilated, it will create a stuffy humid environment that mold and mildew love. Ventilation is especially important in areas where you have a lot of steam creating moisture, like the bathroom and kitchen.
Schedule Regular Maintenance
Preventive maintenance is the best way to keep your heating and cooling equipment in working order. Having your HVAC system serviced twice a year will improve energy efficiency. Another important step for maintaining a healthy home environment is having your gas appliances, including the furnace, checked once a year for dangerous carbon monoxide (CO) emissions.
