If your home needs new gutters, it’s important to take the replacement seriously. One of the biggest decisions is the choice between sectional and seamless gutters. Use this guide to help you decide if seamless is right for your home.
What Are Sectional Gutters?
Traditional sectional gutters come in pieces, some longer than 20 feet, and they’re fitted together to run around the roof’s perimeter. A hacksaw can shorten pieces as needed. Because it’s easy to snap sections together and put them in place, sectional gutters don’t require professional installation.
Unfortunately, gutters installed in sections often develop leaks. Many sectional systems thwart leaks with sealant, but this must be reapplied as regular maintenance.
What Are Seamless Gutters?
This option has gained recognition and is now the most popular gutter configuration available. Seamless gutters are made of aluminum, galvanized steel or copper. The proper lengths are extruded onsite with a special machine and lifted into place. This process requires installation by a qualified professional.
Seamless gutters actually still have a few joints, located at corners and downspout outlets. Fortunately, these can be soldered together to eliminate the need to reapply sealant as a maintenance task.
Benefits of Seamless Gutters
If you opt for seamless, you can expect leak-proof, maintenance-free gutters that will last for years to come. Forms extruded onsite have no length limit, so you don’t have to worry about seams interrupting the flow of water along the roof line.
Other Gutter Considerations
To enjoy the best results from your gutters, you also need to choose from various sizes, shapes and materials. Gutter channels should be large enough to accommodate water flowing from the roof without being overly large. Choosing a smaller K-style channel allows the same amount of water to drain as a larger U-style gutter, making it a viable option.
As for which material to choose, price, resilience and ability to withstand rust are the biggest considerations. A professional can help you make the best choice for your home.
