Believe it or not, your central A/C system is a tempting target for thieves in search of a quick payday. The average unit contains an abundance of copper and other valuable metals that can be stripped in just a matter of minutes. Protecting your air conditioner from theft is a must, especially in areas where such theft is known to occur.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can keep your cooling comfort from being compromised by theft or vandalism. Here are a few tips you can use to protect your A/C unit:
- Place a cage around your system – Putting a durable cage around your A/C unit is one of the best ways of safeguarding it from theft. A good cage should also be accompanied by a heavy, durable concrete base that can’t be easily dislodged.
- Light the area around your unit– A combination of surveillance cameras, warning signs and motion-sensing floodlights can help deter would-be thieves.
- Move it or hide it – Moving your A/C unit elsewhere is an option. Some homeowners have even gone to the trouble of elevating their units to discourage theft. If moving it isn’t in the cards, you can keep your unit out of plain sight with the help of some well-placed shrubbery or a solid wooden fence.
- Arm it with an alarm – Pressure-sensitive A/C alarms can scare off would-be thieves. In many cases, the mere sight of an alarm sticker has helped drive thieves elsewhere.
