Learn How to Decide if It’s Time to Repair or Replace Your HVAC System

Learn How to Decide if It’s Time to Repair or Replace Your HVAC SystemYour HVAC system is giving you trouble again. It hasn’t been working properly, and you need to call in someone to repair it. But will repairs really fix the root problem, or are you pouring more money into a lost cause? It might be better just to replace the whole thing. How do you know? Here are a few signs.

  • Age. If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, or your furnace is more than 15 years old, then it’s nearing the end of its life anyway. Replace it with a more energy-efficient model and save money while making your house more comfortable.
  • Frequent repairs. If your system needs to be fixed more than a couple of times per season, then it’s more trouble than it’s worth and should be replaced.
  • High energy bills. As your HVAC system ages, it uses more energy to keep your home comfortable. Meanwhile, the efficiency of furnaces and A/Cs is constantly improving. If your energy bills are going up, consider replacing your system with one that bears the Energy Star logo. That means it’s been proven to save energy over similar models, without sacrificing performance or features. It’s an investment, to be sure, but you’ll make back the money in energy savings over the years.
  • Excessive noise. If your system produces a lot of banging, squealing, or other unusual noises, it could be a sign that it’s wearing out.
  • Disparate temperatures. If one room in your house is too cold and another isn’t cold enough, that could be a sign that your system is the wrong size for your house. Likewise if the humidity is too high in summer or too low in winter, it could indicate a number of potential problems that would require replacing your system. The bottom line is that if your system isn’t able to keep you comfortable, then you should replace it with one that can.
