As you get settled in for the fall and winter ahead, you’ll want to program your thermostat to not only preserve your home’s overall comfort, but also take advantage of the possible energy savings. The great thing about a programmable thermostat is that it allows you to preset your desired temperatures for each period of the day. Depending on the model, you can even add settings for each day of the week.
Here’s a good example of how you can program your home’s thermostat for maximum savings:
- You can set your thermostat to warm your home to around 68 degrees just before you wake up for the day.
- Once you and your family leave the house, you can have your programmable thermostat set itself back eight to 10 degrees. This way, your home won’t use any more energy than necessary.
- Just before you return home, the thermostat can turn the heat back on in anticipation of your arrival.
- Once the whole family is in bed for the night, you can have your thermostat set itself back once more.
By programming your thermostat like the above example, you can save as much as 15 percent on your energy costs each year. If you don’t have a programmable thermostat in your home, now is the time to make the switch. With the amount of energy and money you’ll save, you’ll be glad you did.
