A heat recovery ventilator usually includes two fans. One removes stale air from inside your home, while the other brings outdoor air into your home. These streams of air remain separate from each other, but the outside air is heated up before moving to your home’s interior. This helps ensure that your home stays warm in cold weather, while also letting fresh air in.

Heat recovery ventilators do more than just eliminating stale air and replacing it with fresher air. They also offer the following benefits:
- Remove moist air — Heat recovery ventilators help keep humidity levels down inside your home, especially in areas where it tends to build up, such as bathrooms. This reduces the risk of having mold and mildew grow inside your home, making your indoor air unhealthy.
- Reduce energy loads — Having a ventilator means your heating system doesn’t have to run as often. The stream of outdoor air is able to gather heat from the outgoing stream of heated air, so your home stays consistently warm without your heating system running constantly. When it’s hot out, this works in reverse. The outgoing air is able to remove some of the incoming air’s heat, leaving your home’s interior cooler. This means your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to cool off your home. These reduced energy loads for your HVAC system results in lower energy bills and less wear and tear.
